Kentucky Reports New Measles Cases
On Friday, June 27, Kentucky health officials announced they found four new cases of measles. Three people from the same family in Woodford County got sick. The fourth person, who lives in Todd County, caught measles while traveling to another country.
Health officials are trying to find people who might have been near the sick people when they were most infectious and likely to spread the disease. None of the four people had gotten a measles shot. With these new cases, Kentucky has had six measles cases this year. These cases come during the biggest measles outbreak in the U.S. since 2000, when the disease was thought to be gone. The best way to keep yourself and others safe is to ensure that everyone receives their vaccines on time. Children usually get the measles shot, which is given with the mumps and rubella vaccines (called the MMR shot), when they are between 12 and 15 months old. They get a second shot when they are between 4 and 6 years old. Read our article: What you Should Know about Measles
