Bourbon County Teen Driver Safety

In a recent report, Kentucky At-Fault Teen Driver Motor Vehicle Crashes, 2021 (Kentucky At-Fault Teen Driver Motor Vehicle Crashes_2021_final.pdf), Bourbon County was ranked in the third quartile for teen motor vehicle at-fault crash injury risk. This means Bourbon County has more teen at-fault crash injuries than most counties in Kentucky, but it’s not among the very worst—it’s in the upper-middle group.

The Checkpoints™ Program, supported by a grant from the Kentucky Office of Highway Safety, is a 90-minute session designed to help reduce teen crashes and violations.

Program Goals

Through Checkpoints™, you will:

  • Help your teens become safer, more responsible drivers.
  • Establish and personalize a free, interactive Parent-Teen Driving Agreement to set clear safety expectations as your teens gradually gain driving experience and independence.

Eligibility

Teens with an Intermediate Restricted Graduated Driver License are encouraged to register. A parent or guardian must attend with the teen(s) and complete the Parent-Teen Driving Agreement.

Why It Matters

New teen drivers face the highest crash risk when:

  • Driving during their first months without adult supervision
  • Driving at night
  • Driving with passengers
  • Driving on high-speed roads
  • Driving in poor weather conditions
  • Driving on unfamiliar roads

Benefits & Outcomes

Families who participate in Checkpoints™ report:

  • Increased understanding of teen driving risks
  • Establishment of guidelines that go beyond Kentucky’s Graduated Driver License law
  • Creation of written agreements to reduce risks
  • Reduction in risky driving behaviors among teens

What We’ve Learned So Far

Early results from the 2024 evaluation of parents and teens in the Checkpoints™ Program show:

  • Nighttime driving is the biggest concern: 93% of parents and teens agree that driving at night is the riskiest time for new drivers.
  • Better understanding of licensing laws: 46% of parents and teens learned more about Kentucky’s Graduated Driver Licensing requirements.
  • Highway crashes are a major risk: 55% of teens better understand that highway collisions are the leading cause of injury-related deaths for teens.

Incentives

  • Drawing for a gas gift card
  • Light dinner
