The health and safety of our residents is a priority of the Bourbon County Health Department (BCHD). To ensure residents can make the best-informed health decisions, we’ve provided a list of product and safety resources below.

West Nile Virus &  La Crosse Virus

Kentucky and nearby states are seeing more cases of West Nile Virus and La Crosse virus. As of September 30, 2025, there have been 19 cases of West Nile Virus in Kentucky, including one death. This is more than the usual 7 cases we see each year.

There have also been two confirmed cases of La Crosse virus and two more suspected cases in Eastern and Central Kentucky this year. To give you an idea, only 11 cases were reported in Kentucky from 2003 to 2024.

🦟 Here’s how to stay safe:

  • Use a registered EPA-approved mosquito repellent
  • Wear long sleeves and pants or clothing treated with permethrin to keep mosquitoes away.
  • Stay indoors from dusk till dawn when mosquitoes are busiest. 
  • Put screens on windows and doors or use air conditioning to keep mosquitoes out. 
  • Eliminate, cover, or dump standing water around your house. 
  • Get free mosquito dunks at our health department while they last!

Different government agencies are responsible for protecting different segments of the food supply. The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) and U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) both publish foods safety recall information and provide sign up for email alerts to the public.
