COMMUNICABLE DISEASES

Disease Surveillance and Tracking

The Health Department Regional Epidemiologist handles disease surveillance and tracking. Physicians and hospitals report communicable diseases as required by state law to the Health Department. Qualified health department staff persons provide investigation of the cases and report the communicable diseases to the state office which reports to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Disease Education

For information on communicable diseases – transmission, prevention, and treatment – for community groups, health professionals, schools or businesses, call the Nurse Supervisor at 859-987-1915.

Resources for Schools

The Kentucky Department for Public Health’s School Health Branch, in partnership with the Immunization Branch and the Infectious Disease Branch, has developed the DISEASE DEFENDER KIT for schools! This toolkit is designed to assist in managing cases of five infectious diseases: pertussis (whooping cough), measles, mumps, varicella (chickenpox), and norovirus that may arise in educational settings. It offers a comprehensive collection of resources for easy access, including quick reference sheets, flyers, and sample scripts and letters. Additionally, the toolkit provides links to resources available on the CDC website.

The DISEASE DEFENDER KIT can be found at the  Infectious Disease Branch – Cabinet for Health and Family Services (ky.gov) website.

* This toolkit should not be considered all-inclusive. Additional resources from KDPH, CDC and other experts may be consulted as needed.*
