APPLICATION FOR EMPLOYMENT The Bourbon County Health Department operates under the Local Health Department Merit System Regulations as administered by the Department for Public Health.  All applicants for classified positions will be reviewed and qualified by the Department for Public Health Personnel Branch.  The regulations may be viewed at http://chfs.ky.gov/dph/lhdmeritregs.htm .

Health Environmentalist

The Bourbon County Health Department is seeking a Health Environmentalist for a full-time (37.5 hours/week) contract position with benefits.  This position is intended to provide ongoing support to the department’s public health environmental and emergency preparedness programs. The role is designed to be sustainable over the long term and is supported by a secure funding source and satisfactory performance.

General Duties include:

  • Inspect food establishments for compliance with state regulations pertaining to sanitation. Performs regular inspections of hotels/motel, schools, swimming pools, mobile home parks, tattoo studios to ensure compliance with state and local regulations pertaining to environmental health, this may include taking product samples and forwarding for testing. Secures water samples, investigates nuisance complaints such as animal bites and other duties related to environmental health; reviews and approves onsite sewage disposal site plans, conducts soil evaluations, designs and approves locations, conducts inspections of conventional, modified and experimental treatment systems, provides investigations & gathers evidence for enforcement of onsite sewage laws; request assistance from supervisors in situations beyond his/her scope of training and experience. Interpret reports generated by the Environmental Health Management Information System (EHMIS)/Graphical Users Interface (GUI) system. Analyzes and interprets data regarding test results, inspections results, etc. and presents results to appropriate types of audiences.
  • Assist with developing, updating and maintaining public health emergency preparedness plans and standard operating procedures; coordinate with existing preparedness staff to ensure plans align with local and state requirements and guidance; help identify training needs for staff related to emergency preparedness; assist in planning, delivering, and evaluating trainings, drills and exercises; work with existing preparedness staff to build and maintain partnerships with community organizations, healthcare providers, schools, and emergency management agencies; participate in local, regional, and state preparedness meetings as assigned.

Minimum Education, Training or Experience: Bachelor’s degree from a college or university with a minor or twenty-four (24) semester hours in environmental health, biological or physical science or registration as a Kentucky Environmental Specialist/Sanitarian under KRS 223.

Special Requirements: Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license with up-to-date vehicle insurance.

Note: an individual upon employment must become registered under the provisions of KRS 223 to remain a permanent employee per Administrative Regulations 902KAR 8:080.

Starting Salary: $22.00-$25.00/hr negotiable with additional experience.  Grade 17
